Mozilla Foundation and galician translations for Firefox and Thunderbird

For many years several galician PC users like me we’ve been following the various attempts of the galician localization community on translating Mozilla products into our native language. In this effort there were at least five persons and one institution who tried unsuccessfully to obtain an answer from the Mozilla Foundation, and because of this silence no one could take over her/his shoulders the coordination responsability on this project.

Today I sadly find a new -not in Mozilla sites nor in distribution lists, but in media- where Mozilla Europe co-founder clearly affirms that if there are not official galician translations for Firefox/Thunderbird/Seamonkey it’s galician translators’ fault. That way this person blames out on the boogie, ignores the existing finished mancomun.org localizations and and leave us without the recognition of the international community. And what it’s worst, a lot of users simply can’t easily find Mozilla apps in their language.

Searching for the reasons that explain this situation I found this thread at Bugzilla, and I think it explains what happened and how we’ve arrived here. It’s dated one year ago. Let me reproduce it:

1. ONLY Mancomun.org is actually doing the Mozilla products translation into Galician.

2. There is no Galician team formed officially and this is NOW Mozilla fault, ONLY MOZILLA FAULT.

3. Not a single person will oppose to Mancomun.org liderating the Galician team for Firefox or any other Mozilla product. This includes me, Miguel Blanco, and the other people who, UNSUCCESFULLY have tried to officially coordinate the group.

4. Every single bug like this, asking for the same, MUST BE CLOSED and MOZILLA HAS TO ACCEPT THE PERSON WHO IN NAME OF MANCOMUN.ORG IS DECIDED TO ASSUME THE COORDINATION.

5. Javier Rial Rodriguez, IN THE NAME OF MANCOMUN.ORG, HAVE ASKED TO ASSUME THE TRANSLATION COORDINATION AND HIS PETITION MUST BE ACCEPTED.

Finally, I just hope I had been clear enough. It’s a shame that a serious foundation like Mozilla is behaving like this in a very serious case. Mozilla foundation is actively denying to Galician Speakers the possibility to have its products in its language when there is people determined to do so. The Galician population is about 2 millions and a half, of whom about 95% understand the language, and, and furthermore, constitutes an active and technologically advanced comunitty. This denial suppose a big lose for Mozilla itself and for the future of the Galician language which is deprived of a fundamental piece of technology. Try to explain this to your developers, those who work for no money, why this software cannot reach some people in the language they speak and then try to explain to Galician people why the cannot have officially Firefox in their language.

It seems obvious that Mozilla foundation has a lot to change in respect to localization and it should take good note of other successful localization projects.

Fortunately, technicians and politicians are responding quickly, just now, to this unfair comments from Tristan Nitot. Let’s wait for an easy answer from Mozilla Foundation, hoping it would be the best decision for everybody.

  1. Agora entendo moitas cousas. Hai tempo que emprego a tradución de mancomún e nunca me expliquei por que non viña directamente nas actualizacións do Firefox (e menos tendo en conta que veñen utilidades en “valenciano”, ese invento do PP).

  4. I don’t know sure Mariano, but I have a little suspect.

Where were they? Promoting translating official OpenOffice and unoffical Firefox/Thunderbird/Lightning, introducing some necessary coordination between galician minifunds (LUGs), collaborating in localizations made by users and the community, editing a smallbusiness-oriented DVD with free aplications…

Too much shit everywhere we look to add more. Enough. I know about what I’m saying.

Perhaps we are not speaking about same politicians, but I think you do.

Let’s be more constructives, or at least don’t put everybody in the same box. Don’t you agree?
